Non Owners Policy Haverhill, Massachusetts MA

Reader’s Question:

I have a drivers license in Haverhill, Massachusetts but I have no car or insurance, Can I drive another persons car that is insured in Massachusetts?

Tara

Haverhill, MA

The Massachusetts compulsory auto liability insurance law requires that all vehicle have insurance on them with the minimum limits of $20,000/$40,000 for bodily injury and property damage of $5000. From this information it would appear that it is the car and not driver that the insurance must be on to comply with the law.

If this is the case then an individual with a valid Haverhill Massachusetts driver’s license but does not own a vehicle to put insurance on, and does not carry a non-owner’s policy, should be able to drive other people’s insured vehicles with their consent. The individual giving the uninsured driver permission to drive their car should verify with their insurance company though to make certain the friend they are lending the vehicle to will be covered by the owner’s policy if they are in an crash.

If you are going to borrow your friend’s vehicle on a regular basis then the insurance carrier may require you to be added to the car insurance policy in order for you to be properly covered.

SR22 Auto Insurance Maine ME

Reader’s Question:

Am I still going to be required by my state of Maine to carry auto insurance even if I do not own a car?

Paula

Portland, ME

You are not required to carry auto insurance on yourself if you do not own a car, however, when driving other people’s cars you will need to make sure their insurance extends to you so that you can show proof of insurance if requested by law enforcement.

If you fail to produce evidence of insurance in Maine, you will be required to file proof of financial responsibility through an SR-22 insurance certificate or face suspension of your license and registration privileges. So, even if you do not own a car but is required to carry SR-22, then you could be required to carry insurance, this may be in the form of a non-owner’s policy.

So again, showing a proof of auto insurance is required when you are driving other people’s vehicles. I would suggest making sure that the vehicle is insured by the car owner and that you are covered by that insurance just in case you’d be involved in an accident.

SR22 Non Owners Insurance Question

Reader’s Question:

I got a DUI in 2003 and haven’t reinstated my drivers license yet. I recently got a new work and need to buy a vehicle quickly. Can my brother put me on her insurance if I need an SR-22? Is it more cost effective to try and obtain it on my own? Do I do this before purchasing the vehicle?

Fred

Lincoln, NE

In many states you have to provide insurance when registering a car so it is helpful to obtain insurance beforehand. If you do not have a car at the time of buying insurance you will likely be able to obtain a non-owners SR-22 which you can change into regular SR22 policy when you buy a car.

If you want to be listed to your brother’s insurance policy you will need to speak with the insurance provider that he is with and check if it is even possible. Even if it is, it would be best to compare the quote of that insurance with obtaining your own policy. Until you get the quotes for both you will not be able to know which would be more cost effective.

In order to keep the insurance policy you are buying the insurance providers typically will require you to be in the process of having your license reinstated.

Non Owners For A New Car

Reader’s Question:

I planning to purchase my first car. What kind of insurance can I have for rentals cars or test drives?

Mike

Great Falls, MT

Without having an actual vehicle to insure or insurable interest in a car (by having your name on a title or lease) there are limited options for you with regards to car insurance. A non-owners policy is one option since it is for drivers that do not yet own a car to insure.

If you plan on renting cars on a daily basis, a non-owners policy might be more cost effective than relying on the insurance sold at rental companies. But, collision and comprehensive coverage are not usually available for this type of policy so it is likely that you would still need to buy this extra coverage from the rental company.

As for insurance to test drive cars, you may ask if a non-owners policy plus any insurance a dealership has on its cars would be enough to let you go on a test drive.

Non Owners Insurance Cost

Reader’s Question:

I am just wondering how much a non owners insurance cost?

Austin

Aurora, IL

Non-owners insurance is coverage to provide a motorist liability protection for when they are at fault in an accident but do not own a car. Typically, non-owners policies can include liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverages and medical payments.

Generally, a non-owner auto liability policy will cost somewhere between $200 and $300 a year and it will depend upon the rating system of the insurance carrier in which you get a policy from. Rating factors such as your driving history will be looked at. This type of insurance policy is cheaper than an owner’s policy since you do not have a specific car to cover. In addition to that, you are not as much of a risk as a car owner to an insurance carrier since you will not normally drive as much as an individual who has their own car at their disposal to use whenever they please.

Reader’s Question:

If I want to learn to drive, and I do not own my own car, do I need auto insurance? How do I get car insurance if I do not own a car?

Richard

Bakersfield, CA

Most states will require you be insured if you going to be operating a vehicle – even if you are just learning to drive. Now, you can be listed on someone else’s policy as a motorist for that insured’s car. Plus, if you want car insurance, however do not own a car, you may want to buy a ‘non-owner’ policy. This insurance policy will provide coverage for liability, medical payments and uninsured motorist coverages for someone who does not own a car and will be driving a vehicle owned by someone else.

Reader’s Question:

Is it possible for an individual to have medical coverage on themselves in case of an accident being in someone else’s car that is not insured? What is that car insurance policy referred to in insurance terms? I live in PA.

Arnold

Philadelphia, PA

There is a type of auto insurance that is called a non-owners policy that one may buy to cover themselves if they do not own a car in which to place insurance on. Persons typically buy a non-owners policy to cover themselves for the items they may be liable for (hurting someone else or something else).

So through medical payments, you could have medical coverage through a non-owners policy in Pennsylvania. MedPay, as it is referred to, covers medical expenses to individuals when injured in case of an accident. It is also possible that there may be coverage if as a pedestrian a car injures you. Coverage is limited to the conditions and terms contained in the insurance policy by the insurance carriers.

Non Owners SR22 Insurance

Reader’s Question:

My daughter has non-owners sr22, so she can drive my vehicle to work and back. She is thinking about getting a motorcycle. Will she still be able to drive my vehicle on that same insurance if she changes her insurance, and puts it on a motorcycle? We live in Babylon, NY.

Daniel

Babylon, NY

A motorcycle is technically not an automobile, because a motorcycle does not have four wheels. He can also add a ‘Miscellaneous Type Vehicle’ endorsement to her current personal auto insurance policy. This endorsement will permit her to cover her motorcycle on her current non-owners sr22 policy. If she is unable to do this endorsement, she will need to take out an insurance policy that is separate from his non-owner sr22 policy and keep his non-owner sr22 policy in force.

She may check different ca insurance website to make comparison shop. This is a great way to get a cheaper auto insurance rate.

Reader’s Question:

What is a named operator policy?

Belle

Thank you for asking Belle

A named-operator policy is also sometimes called a non-owner policy. It is written when the individual needs coverage only for his personal operation of a motor vehicle not owned by him or a family member.

The reason people get this type of policy is because if you are in need of a required liability insurance policy to get an SR22 filed with the state but do not own a motor vehicle.

This type of liability insurance only covers the named insured while operating vehicles. In somet states a non-owner policy includes Bodily Injury Liability and Property Damage Liability. The policy will cover you up to the limits you choose depending on the type of coverage you choose for your policy.

Non owners car insurance

Reader’s Question:

Im planning to get a non owners insurance policy. Im living with my roommate who has a car and she said I can use it. Is it possible to get a non owners policy?

Michelle

Thank you for asking Michelle

Typically a “non owner” insurance insurance policy includes medical payments, liability and uninsured driver. Most insurance providers offer this insurance policy to individuals who operates vehicles occasionally but does have their own vehicle. The keyword is “occasionally.”

Since the car is in your household, insurance providers may think that you have more access to operate this motor vehicle than for an “occasional” use.

Because of this, it is more likely that you may not be able to obtain the “non owner” policy. The vehicle owner may have to take out a policy for this car and include you on her policy as an “eligible or additional driver.

You may verify with the insurance company where the car is insured in to know more information.

Goodluck!
