Non owners car insurance

Reader’s Question:

Im planning to get a non owners insurance policy. Im living with my roommate who has a car and she said I can use it. Is it possible to get a non owners policy?

Michelle

Thank you for asking Michelle

Typically a “non owner” insurance insurance policy includes medical payments, liability and uninsured driver. Most insurance providers offer this insurance policy to individuals who operates vehicles occasionally but does have their own vehicle. The keyword is “occasionally.”

Since the car is in your household, insurance providers may think that you have more access to operate this motor vehicle than for an “occasional” use.

Because of this, it is more likely that you may not be able to obtain the “non owner” policy. The vehicle owner may have to take out a policy for this car and include you on her policy as an “eligible or additional driver.

You may verify with the insurance company where the car is insured in to know more information.

Reader’s Question:

Me and my husband will not going to have a vehicle in a month or so, I just want to know if we need to get a non owners? Is it possible to be on high risk if we do not have an insurance for a month?

Isabel

Thank you for asking Isabel

If you don’t have insurance because you do not own a vehicle, does not make you a ‘high risk.’ Those individuals that constitute ‘high risk’ are individuals like teenagers, a bad driving history, and a bad credit score to most insurance companies. Some companies use credit to help determine risk of the certain individual. According to their statistics, those individuals with good credit history are better drivers and less likely to be involved in accidents than those motorist with bad credit record. Now, it would be best if you and your husband obtain a ‘non-owner’ insurance policy if either of you will be operating someone else’s motor vehicle. This non owner policy will secure coverage for liability, uninsured motorist coverages and medical payments for an individual will be driving a vehicle owned by somebody else and who does not own a car.In addition to that, you may want to check if you can add a car to that insurance policy in the future and turn it from a ‘non-owner’ policy to an “owner’s” policy. In that case, you do not have to cancel this policy and have to start up a brand new.

Reader’s Question:

I usually rent a vehicle, what kind of insurance do I need?

Malen

Thank you for asking Malen.

If you usually rent a vehicle, a “non-owners” policy might be best for you than relying on the insurance sold at rental counters. Comprehensive and collision coverage however are not usually available or included for non-owners policies. It would seem that you still need to obtain this from the rental agency. Your non-owners car insurance will cover you when you rent a car and got involved in an accident while operating that motor vehicle. It will provide liability coverage protection. If you operate your friend’s car and damaged it, the car owner’s insurance takes precedence over your non-owners coverage. However, your policy would be activated when the car owner’s liability limits are exhausted.

Reader’s Question:

Is there an age restriction when applying for an sr22 non owners policy?

Jenny

Thank you for asking Jenny.

Insurance providers differ on their guidelines for non-owners insurance so some insurers might have age restrictions while other companies will not. You need to comparison shop to find the insurance provider that is right for your needs.

If you are a minor and living at home with parents or relatives usually it is easier and cheaper to have you put onto their current car insurance policy. If that is not feasible and if you do not own a motor vehicle but are licensed and occasionally operate a car, non owners is a type of policy that could work for you. It is necessary that you ask when you shop for this auto insurance, if you will be covered for motor vehicles owned by members of the same household because some insurance companies do not permit this.

Reader’s Question:

What is the difference between an sr22 and the non owner’s sr22?

Del

Thank you for asking Del

Basically, an SR-22 is a form which must be filed by the insurance provider to show the state or court that an individual has car insurance liability in effect. Typically it is required of a driver who has been involved in an accident or cited of a moving violation and was unable to prove financial responsibility. Its also can be required as part of the reinstatement of license process in some states.

If you are required to acquire a SR-22 form or financial responsibility certificate in this way and do not own a car, you can get a Non-Owners SR-22. Generally, a non-owners SR-22 permits the named insure to drive any motor vehicle that they are given permission to operate the vehicle by the car owner, unless the motor vehicle is owned by a household member.

Basically, the difference between a regular SR-22 and a Non-Owners SR-22 is that with a Non-Owners SR-22 policy is required if you do not own a vehicle to directly insure.

Reader’s Question:

I just want to know if non owners policy is available in all the states. If I only have the non owners policy and got involved in an accident, what will be the primary for the third party damage or liability?

Princess

Thank you for asking Princess.

The Texas Department of Insurance’s definition of a non-owner policy is an insurance coverage that offers liability, uninsured motorist, and medical payments to a named insured who does not own a motor vehicle.

Non-owner policies are not available in all states. If you want to find out if your state allows for it contact an insurance providers to see if it is quoted in your state or your state’s insurance regulator.

According to The TX Insurance Commissioner’s information sheet on the pros and cons of non-owners insurance, the named non-owner coverage is always in excess of the liability coverage bought by the car owner. This means if you got involved in an accident, the car owner’s liability insurance pays first, up to the limits of his or her policy. The non-owner coverage comes into play only if the cost of injuries and/or property damage goes over the limits of the car owner’s liability policy.

This may differ in other States but in general the owner of the vehicle’s insurance is primary and the driver’s insurance, non-owners or other type of policy, is secondary or excess regarding third party damage or liability.

Reader’s Question:

What is the definition and condition for using a non owners insurance?

Thames

Thank you for asking Thames.

Non-owners insurance is basically an additional coverage to give you liability protection for you when you are at fault and don’t own a motor vehicle.

Getting an sr22 non owners is subject to limited coverage with the exclusions and definition in that insurance policy. Those are typically standard to the coverage you have. For instance, to get a non-owners policy you would only buy bodily injury and property damage coverage.

You will need to know if any vehicle that you drive is insured. All vehicle owners of any vehicle is required to insure the cars they own. A non-owners policy would be secondary to that insurance.

There is actually no definite legal definition for non-owners that applies to auto insurance. Insurance providers file their insurance rates with their respective insurance departments. A non-owner may be written when the individual needs coverage only for his personal use of a vehicle not owned by him or a family member.
